How to Check if a Downloaded APK Is Safe to Install?

The best part about Android is the amount of control that the OS gives the users. Because of which, not only can one use Google Play for installing apps, but you can also site load an app using an APK file. For this, all you need to do is have a copy of the APK on your phone, enable unknown sources in Privacy settings, and launch the APK. Your app will then be installed. Of course, Google doesn’t really recommend this method, and neither do we, since many such packages do come with harmful malware.

So how do you ensure whether your download package is safe? Here are three simple ways you can find out.

Wireless Total website

The Wireless Total website lets you upload your APK files to check for viruses and other issues. Open the website, click on Choose File, and in the browser dialog box select your file, click on Scan it to get your results. This will give you a quick check on whether the APK is safe to install or not.

Envio AppScan is also a similar tool to Virus Total, and it also provides a detailed report on the APK file you have. Open the website, drag and drop the APK file, and click on Scan package. You can also enter your email address if you’d prefer to receive the results in your mailbox. Envio APK Scan gives you a detailed result regarding the risk rating permissions that the app asks for, file size and Virus can, etc. This should help you verify the authenticity of your APK Safe.

Hash of APK

The third way will be by checking the hash of an APK. The Sha of a file is kind of like a digital fingerprint, so if you’re looking for an app that has its Sha mentioned publicly by the developer, then you can simply compare that Sha with the one of your downloaded APK. If they match, then the file is safe. You can use an invisible APK Scan to look up for this information, but if you want to check on your phone itself, here’s how you do it. Install Hashtroid from Google Play Select a hash file under select a Hash, choose Sha 256, and choose the APK file you want to check.

Tap on Calculate this will give you the APK’s hash data, and by using this method, you can compare the hashes of APKs to see if it is safe to install or not. Leave us a comment below and tell us about your experiences and for all things tech, along with
